Mar. 12 - Drammers DC Welcomes Ardbeg's Distillery Manager Colin Gordon...
Hello DC Drammers!
We’re thrilled to announce a special in-person tasting on March 12th at 7pm with the Distillery Manager of the Ardbeg Distillery - Colin Gordon, who is taking a rare break from being on site in Scotland running the distillery to visit the DC market. Not surprisingly, they are rolling out an insane lineup to match the occasion:
Ardbeg 25yo - These limited edition bottles normally retail for north of $1,000 and are rare for an obvious reason — there’s hardly any of it left. Keep in mind that production at Ardbeg was halted altogether in 1981, resumed on a limited basis in 1989, and didn’t get back to full production until 1996, just a few years before this whisky was distilled. That meant that nearly all the whisky they made at the time was going into building up stocks for basic things like the 10yo, with very little room to set aside whisky for longer aging. 46% abv.
Y2K - 23yo Ardbeg. Transport yourself back to the Y2k craze in 1999, when everyone thought our computers would collapse when the close struck midnight to ring in the new century. The folks at Ardbeg decided to commemorate the madness with a distillation run that would be taking place when the clock struck midnight, and so as the rest of the distillery team were out celebrating the new year, the distillers drew straws to see who would stay behind to run the stills. When all the Y2k fears turned out to be a bit of a nothingburger, these casks were forgotten about until recently. Aged in bourbon and oloroso casks for 23 years and bottled at 46% abv.
19yo Traigh Bhan. It’s kind of hard to believe this isn’t the headliner! 19yo Ardbeg is still quite rare, this batch being matured in oloroso and ex-bourbon casks. 46.2% abv
Eureka! This new limited edition is hot off the presses - created in celebration of 25 years of the Ardbeg Committee. It is a marriage of PX sherry casks combined with roasted malt spirit matured in bourbon casks and offered at 52.2% alcohol strength.
Spectacular. This was the special “Ardbeg Day” bottling released at last year’s Feis Ile festival on Islay (which our club attends each year!). Matured in Ex-Bourbon and Port Wine Casks, bottled at 46.2% abv.
Uigeadail. For many of our members, this is their favorite release in Ardbeg’s core range, because it provides a regularly available, affordable bottle of high proof Ardbeg (54.2% abv!). This core range entry from Ardbeg sees their famously heavy peated, smokey whisky aged in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.
Ardbeg 10yo. Of course, no Ardbeg event would be complete without their flagship workhorse, the iconic 10yo expression, so we’ll have that on hand also as a delicious reference point.
That’s our lineup, we hope you can join us! As usual, we’ll order in light food (likely pizza) which is included with your ticket.
