An exciting new independent bottler of rum is shaking things up in Australia, and we figured it was high-time we hosted an online event to pick his brain and try some of his wonderful rums! Justin Boseley is based in Australia and has nurtured a lifelong love of rum, even spending a decade cruising around the Caribbean working on giant yachts before returning to Australia with the idea that he could create Australia’s first independent bottler of rum. He purchases parcels of rum and ages them in Australia’s hot climate. We’ve been keeping an eye on his releases (by our count he’s up to 11 expressions released so far), and we brought in 5 of them to DRINQY for our members to try, which we’ll be tasting at this online event on August 3rd.
The lineup is surprisingly hefty for a new startup:
Mutiny 21yo South Pacific Cask Strength Rum. Released in 2023, 1 of only 92 bottles. 65% abv. 100% pot still cask strength, fully tropically aged in the South Pacific with a whopping 85 to 90%, angels share. Nose: Funky Banana and tropical fruit salad, biscuit spices and some clove notes as well as a definite floral presence in the mix there as well. A ton of tropical fruit on the palate, the high abv is extremely well integrated. The absolute definition of a chewy finish on this one. Big, funky, tropical fruit salad but the sticky sweetness is tempered by the dry tannins from the 21 years in wood.
Barbados [Foursquare] 10.5yo Rum. 1 of 164 bottles. 52% abv. Released in 2023. This single cask, triple–matured, pure rum is a mix of FourSquare pot and column distilled spirit – tropically matured in Barbados for 8 years in ex-bourbon then transported to Adelaide for “Australian dry aging’. 8 months in a 60 year old Seppeltsfield Winery ex-Tawny cask and then a further 22 months in a high-char ex-bourbon barrel to tame the tannins from the Tawny cask.
Barbados [Foursquare] 9.5yo PX Rum. 1 of 169 bottles. 52% abv. Released in 2023. This single cask is also a mix of FourSquare pot and column distilled spirit – tropically matured in Barbados for 8 years in ex-bourbon then transported to Adelaide for “Australian dry aging’. Six months in a Spanish Pedro Rodriguez, PX Sherry cask and then a further 12 months in a high-char ex-bourbon barrel to tame the tannins from the sherry cask.
9yo Ex-Bourbon Cask Single Blended Australian Rum. 1 of 1,260 bottles. 55% abv. A Pot Column Blend. Released in 2023. This is a blend of Pot and Column distilled rums. The rum is produced from locally sourced molasses and the fermentation period prior to distillation is between 24 and 72 hours. The rum has been aged for 4 years in Tropical North Queensland and a further 5 years in the less tropical port of Amsterdam. It has been aged in ex-bourbon barrels (small white oak). 9 year old rum from the iconic Australian distillery . Sipped, initially the rum is quite fiery with the molasses and oak spice taking centre stage. A few sips in and as the palate and throat acclimates to the rum – we begin to get more of the softer bourbon influenced notes. There is a hint of smokiness.
10yo Single Blended Rum 10yo Muscat Cask. 1 of 1,240 bottles. 47% abv. A Pot Column Blend, listed as a 10yo, though it notes on the bottle “Distilled in 1994”, suggesting that portions of the blend are much older. Released in 2022. Distilled in a pot and column still combination in the South Pacific, 100%, tropically aged, 50% Angels share. Nosed it has a herbal quality, similar to St Lucian rum.
