Fellow Drammers,

On Thursday, September 5th (starting at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern), please join us for a special online tasting with Abraham Montes, the Master Distiller of Don Abraham Tequila (NOM 1480). This is part of a new initiative to explore additive free tequilas — as you probably heard, there is a raging issue of tequilas that have sugar, glycerine or other additives, so we thought it would be helpful to try to explore a series of additive free ones. So, on Sept. 5th, we’ll be tasting through Don Abraham’s entire range of 5 expressions: blanco, reposado, anejo, extra anejo, and their soon-to-be-available “Still Strength” expression. We’ve asked for confirmation, but from what we can tell online, it doesn’t appear that their Master Distiller has done many (possibly any) online tastings like this before, so this would appear to be a very rare treat.

For the more whisky-centric among us, if you’re new to tequila, fear not, here are the basics: tequila is made from the blue agave in a defined region mostly within the state of Jalisco in Mexico (the majority is made nearby the actual town of tequila, which is 65 kilometers or so Northwest of the bustling city of Guadalajara), though technically it can also be made in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. Technically blanco can be aged up to 60 days, though usually it never touches a barrel. Reposado is anything aged between 2 months and one year in a barrel, anejo is anything aged between one year and 3 years, and extra anejo is aged at least 3 years. Not for this event, but just FYI there’s another legal category called “joven” which blends blanco with older aged distillate, as well as an unofficial category called “cristalino” where they age tequila and then filter out the color, but we won’t be tasting either of those at this event.

We hope you can join us! As usual, we’ve brought all the expressions into our retail partner www.DRINQY.com (the still strength is a pre-sale and will ship in September, the others are available now).

Cheers,
Drammers Club
